WP1 Improved hydropower refurbishment performance M1-30 2/3
Progress

Development of new digital monitoring systems that measure the condition and efficiency of hydropower turbines in real time without shutting down the plant. The goal is to optimise maintenance intervals and improve overall performance.

  • D1.1 - Demonstration of monitoring technologies

    Due October 2025 | Sensitive

  • D1.2 - Monitoring technologies

Due April 2026 | Pending review

  • D1.3 - Abrasion monitoring

    Due October 2026

Progress

Testing innovative technologies to make existing hydropower plants more flexible, for example by combining them with battery storage or retrofitting pumping systems. This allows plants to respond better to fluctuating electricity demand.

  • D2.1 - Initial studies for retrofitting with pumped storage

    Due July 2025 | Sensitive

  • D2.2 - Control algorithm for hybrid systems

    Due October 2025 | Sensitive

Progress

Analysing the economic opportunities that hydropower modernisation offers, and identifying which markets and revenue streams will be relevant in the future.

  • D3.1 - Business outlook

Due April 2026 | Pending review

  • D3.2 - Multimarket model

    Due April 2026 | Sensitive

Progress

Developing and testing solutions that make hydropower modernisation more environmentally friendly, for example through eel-friendly turbine designs and measures to restore natural water flows.

  • D4.1 - Eel-friendly turbine development plan

    Due April 2025 | Sensitive

  • D4.2 - Eel friendly turbine design

    Due October 2026

  • D4.3 - Environmental flow

    Due October 2026

Progress

Investigating the broader benefits that modernised hydropower plants can offer to society such as managing floods and droughts, supporting recreational use of waterways, and protecting biodiversity.

  • D5.1 - Hydropower pressures assessment

    Due July 2025 | Public

  • D5.2 - Matrix of future water uses

    Due September 2025 | Public

  • D5.3 - Goal and scope of Life Cycle Assessment

    Due October 2025 | Public
